Northern Goshawk Management Plan

Halting Their Precipitous Population Decline in Northern BC

Explore research ranging from Goshawk management strategies to landscape level forestry stewardship practices. Many of these studies were carried out with the goal of increasing biodiversity and old growth attributes in our local forests.

Restoration of Forest Values

Restoration focused on a balanced stewardship environment that supports us and all the species with which we share our small planet.

With a focus on creating forest attributes that both support our local forest economy - jobs, while at the same time providing for a rich and diverse forest environment.  An environment that supports an abundance of berries, game, birds and plants that in turn support us and all the wildlife.

The Umbrella

The story of a Tea Lake Goshawk, affectionately named Gus, tackles what needs to be done to help this keystone species recover.

‘The Umbrella’ represents everything that has been done and what still needs to happen to maintain the balance of Gus’s habitat and our forest industry. We all fall under the shelter of this umbrella, everything from humans and goshawks to pine trees and bees. The umbrella ties together the groundwork done so far, the role of the government in habitat recovery, and many more aspects of the Gus’s story.

Educational Resources

A devoted space to access local game camera photo and audio sets, as well as animal class specific photo sets. Cameras were placed in areas within the SD87 school district, chosen specifically with school bus access in mind. The goal of this project is create interest in local wildlife and ecosystems in our community.

Frank Doyle, a wildlife biologist, and Mike Buirs, a retired RPF, share a passion for the forests of northern BC and all of their inhabitants. This website is dedicated to their research regarding the Northern Goshawk and related stewardship and restoration, as well as the educational resources inspired by work with SD87.
